It is interesting that the Santa Clarita<br \/>\nCouncil estimates they will save almost $400,000 in doing so,\u201d <\/i>&nbsp;in reference to the news that the Santa<br \/>\nClarita City Council unanimously <\/span>voted to end the LS&amp;S contract last week.&nbsp; <a href=\"https:\/\/signalscv.com\/2018\/01\/council-unanimously-votes-take-back-library-operations\/\">Santa Clarita Votes Unanimously to<br \/>\nTake Back Library<\/a><span>.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><br \/>\nAnother recent news report found poor performance by LS&amp;S led to their<br \/>\nouster, a sad harbinger for Escondido\u2019s library.&nbsp; <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/communities\/north-county\/sd-no-library-outsourcing-20180110-story.html#share=email~story\"><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; mso-ascii-font-family: Calibri; <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">&nbsp;<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;\">\n<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">In<br \/>\nresponse to the transfer of the Escondido public library into private hands, the<br \/>\nSave Our Escondido Library (SOEL) coalition announced five actions in response<br \/>\nto the transfer of management from the public to a private corporation<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;\">\n<b><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><br \/><\/span><\/b><\/div>\n<div style=\"line-height: normal;\">\n<b><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">LIBRARY<br \/>\nDISTRICT PETITION DRIVE<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">: No Bond<br \/>\nwithout an Independent Library District.&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt;\">Building on the success of the<br \/>\npetition drive to oppose privatization of the library, which garnered over<br \/>\n4,000 signatures and mobilized residents, a new petition drive has been<br \/>\nlaunched.&nbsp; <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The petition <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">reads, <i>\u201c<\/i><\/span><i><span style=\"background: white; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;\">We, the undersigned, are calling for the creation<br \/>\nof an independent library district that would remove all control of the library<br \/>\nfrom the Mayor and City Council. These volunteers will visit the library regularly and evaluate the<br \/>\noperations of the library. Visits will be unannounced.&nbsp; <o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<b>COMMUNITY LIBRARY COMPLAINT<br \/>\nSYSTEM:<\/b>&nbsp; A particularly revealing exchange during the<br \/>\nOctober contract hearing at city hall was when city staff could not answer the<br \/>\nsimplest question from Councilmember Olga Diaz about how complaints will be<br \/>\nhandled.&nbsp; It was clear to SOEL that the<br \/>\ncity did not know how complaints would be addressed.&nbsp; Slow response to problems was also cited in<br \/>\nthe reasons LS&amp;S was dropped from Santa Clarita. SOEL will also encourage<br \/>\npeople to report any complaints to the city <b>and <\/b>to SOEL so that resolution<br \/>\nof them can be tracked.
