\nMayor Abed, Gallo, Masson need to hear from you <\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/div>\n

\nLast week, Escondido Mayor<\/b> Sam Abed and Councilmembers Ed Gallo and John Masson <\/b>voted to move
\nforward to outsource operations of the Escondido Public Library to the private,
\nfor-profit, out-of-state corporation Library Systems and
\nServices (LS&S) which specializes in taking over failing libraries. But,
\nours isn\u2019t failing. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\nWe are proud
\nof our library and its great staff and programs. Outsourcing would spell
\nthe end of our library as we know it. <\/b><\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nPlease
\njoin the 3,000<\/span><\/span>
\nresidents already opposing outsourcing the library because:  <\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n\u00b7    <\/span><\/span>We would lose local control of an important
\ncity resource.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n\u00b7    <\/span><\/span>Our local tax $$ would go to a corporate
\norganization in Maryland, not stay here in our community.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n\u00b7    <\/span><\/span>The cost-benefit analysis did not correctly
\nassess all impacts.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n\u00b7    <\/span><\/span>No alternatives (there are many) were
\npublicly evaluated so that the best option could be selected.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n\u00b7    <\/span><\/span>This action will further divide the
\ncommunity and erode support for a bond for a new library.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n\u00b7    <\/span><\/span>This action will cause a loss of
\nvolunteers, donations, and skilled library personnel.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n\u00b7    <\/span><\/span>Outsourcing of our library is opposed by
\nthe Escondido Library Board of Trustees, Library Foundation, and American
\nLibrary Association <\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nOur library is more
\nthan a building<\/span>;
\n<\/span>it is the programs and people
\nwho make it the soul of the community. We need to preserve our library as a
\ntrue community resource, responsive to the needs of our residents. Although Council
\ntook one vote (3-2) to move forward, a contract has not yet been signed. Please
\nspeak out and stand up for our librarians, patrons, and library programs.  There
\nis still time!<\/b>   <\/span><\/o:p><\/span><\/b><\/div>\n

\n<\/span><\/span>Stop the LS&S contract process.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n2.     
\n<\/span><\/span>Solicit, evaluate, and consider, at a minimum,
\nproposals from the current library department and county through a public
\nprocess.<\/o:p><\/span><\/div>\n
\n3.     
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span>Impanel a Budget Committee to develop a
\ncomprehensive, sustainable plan to address the pension crisis and the paydown
\nof pension liability<\/o:p><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
\nCONTACT LS&S<\/span><\/b><\/span> and ask them to withdraw
\ntheir proposal and step away from our library.
